"but the tax collector stood off at a distance ... and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, the latter went home justifies, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

luke 18:13-14

One of the most beautiful prayers in all of Scripture is found in today’s Gospel. "O God, be merciful to me a sinner!" It is the foundation of our whole relationship with God. It is an honest statement about our human condition and our absolute need for God’s redeeming grace. We become fertile ground for God to penetrate our heart and draw us into himself. It is the beginning of our journey to becoming God’s saints.
